KMA was hired to design the Costa Rican headquarters of the Canadian waste management company Ebi after having been already previously commissioned to design their waste management facility. The lot had an existing house on it that was transformed into an office space and the new building features a kitchen, a patio, and storage rooms. We connected both the new and the old with a staircase and painted the railings blue to highlight this vertical connection.
We wanted to ensure we were capitalizing on the stunning views of the valleys, so we kept the building quite open, allowing for natural light to enter the building. The open scheme also allows for cross ventilation, which is important as there is no air conditioning in the building. We created a skylight in the reception area to offer more light, creating a welcoming area for visitors. Beams were utilized to create an element mimicking a pergola. This is a feature that has come to be adored by the employees, as they get to see the changing movement of the light throughout the day.
